re-creation REVUE

A revue (from French ‘magazine’ or ‘overview’) is a type of multi-act popular theatrical entertainment that combines music, dance, and sketches. The revue has its roots in 19th century popular entertainment and melodrama but grew into a substantial cultural presence of its own during its golden years from 1916 to 1932.

Choose a vintage music, dance or sketch clip of your choice and recreate it into a live performance. From balboa to black bottom, chorus line to comedy, swing outs to song and dance or just good old solo jazz - this year, we want to see it all in our re-creation revue.

We’re looking for up to 10 short pieces of approx 1min each and you can do it on your own, in pairs, or with a group.

The goal is to highlight women of jazz dance and music, but the clips do NOT have to contain women performers exclusively (Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers anyone?!)

You can perform as close to the original as possible or put your own slant on it. You can choose a clip from a movie, a social dance, a documentary - anything - so long as it’s vintage all the way baby.

So if you’ve been wanting to study Mabel, Marie or Mama Lou, sing with your own ‘Andrews Sisters’, learn something from “The Spirit Moves” or swing the F out like Frankie and Ann - this project is for you!

Email if you want to be part of it, along with your clip idea/s.

We’ll be looking for diversity in the performances so get creative in your re-creations!

*We will not accept any clips that may cause , or be considered culturally insensitive or discriminatory towards any person based on race, religion, gender, or sexual preference.
